Costume Jewelry
Costume jewelry is made from non-precious metal and stones. It generally refers to vintage pieces dating back 20 years or more, and is very often applied to designer created items that become collectible.
The use of the term is credited to Coco Chanel who designed jewelry to decorate her "costumes", the French word for designer clothing.
Contemporary non-precious jewelry is termed, "fashion jewelry", and may become Costume Jewelry if it stays around for a while. Bakelite Jewelry was hand carved out of the first, very tough artificial plastic not manufactured after the 1950s. It is highly collectible today.
